Self-care is an important part of plasma donation. Whether you’re a first-time donor or a plasma-donating pro, we’re here to support you with steps you can take to feel prepared and comfortable before, during, and after your donation.

Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions we hear at our donation centers, along with practical tips to help you get prepared to give the gift of plasma to those in need. A few simple steps can make a big difference!

Why Do Preparation and Recovery Matter for Plasma Donation?

Every donation helps someone in need, which is what makes plasma donation such a rewarding experience. And we want your experience to be as easy as possible. Start with a good night’s rest to help you stay alert during the appointment. A good meal and plenty of hydration before your visit can help lower the chance you’ll feel any fatigue or dizziness after donating.

You can also check out our helpful guide for what to expect during your donation. It covers eligibility, how to schedule an appointment, and basic preparation steps. Let’s dive into some of the specific ways you can get yourself ready physically for your donation.

How Much Water Should I Drink Before Donating Plasma?

Your body needs water to maintain your overall health, with some sources saying 11.5 to 15.5 cups of water a day is a good rule of thumb. It’s especially important to stay hydrated the day or two before your donation appointment. Drinking plenty of water can help improve blood flow and reduce side effects like dizziness.

There are lots of great ways to hydrate regularly throughout the day. Water is, of course, an excellent option. Another great choice is sports drinks with electrolytes. Did you know that you can also increase water intake with certain foods? Watermelon, cantaloupe, lettuce, cucumber, and yogurt can all help you hydrate in a big way.

It’s best to avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages prior to donating, as they can dehydrate you.

Keep in mind you'll want to hydrate even more if you’re active or spend time in the heat. The key thing is to listen to your body and be consistent. Try to hydrate before you feel thirsty.

What Should I Eat Before Donating Plasma?

A high-protein, iron-rich meal within three hours of donating is the way to go. It’s the best way to help support healthy blood protein and iron levels in this important moment. Say no to high-fat or greasy foods since they can negatively impact your plasma.

For a morning plasma donation appointment, you can prepare high-protein cereal or bread with iron-rich strawberries. A well-balanced lunch might include proteins like lean meat, beans, or grains paired with dark green vegetables, sweet potatoes, or eggs for an extra boost of iron. There are plenty of great options to choose from, no matter what time of day you donate. For more inspiration, here are ideas for incorporating healthy proteins and foods high in iron.

If you have special dietary or nutritional needs, be sure to check with your doctor before donating.

What Should I Eat After Donating Plasma?

Just like before donating, stick to eating high-protein, iron-rich meals after your appointment. They’ll help your body recover faster. It’s also a good idea to skip the caffeine for a few hours after a donation. Instead, opt for water or a sports drink to rehydrate.

You may want to bring a few snacks to have on hand right after your plasma donation appointment. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Trail mix.
  • Granola bars with nuts and seeds.
  • Beef jerky.
  • Cheese.
  • Hummus and veggies.

Remember, your body will be hard at work replenishing your plasma. So, take it easy for 24 to 48 hours and get a good night’s sleep.

Can I Donate Plasma if I Smoke Weed/Marijuana?

If you have used marijuana or a product containing THC, you will be deferred from donating plasma on the day of use. We always require our donors to arrive clear-headed and able to follow instructions.

Can I Drink Alcohol Before or After Donating Plasma?

It’s best to skip alcohol starting the night before your appointment. Alcohol can dehydrate your body, which may make recovery feel harder.

On the day of donation, donors must avoid alcohol ahead of their appointment. Individuals showing any physical or mental effects of alcohol use are not eligible to donate plasma. We will ask you to come back another time if we notice any signs of alcohol use.

After donating, wait at least a few hours before you drink alcohol. We recommend prioritizing rest, eating healthy, and drinking lots of fluids. Your body will thank you for the fuel to help it regenerate plasma after donating.

Can I Smoke or Use Nicotine Before and After Donation?

Taking a break from smoking the day of your plasma donation appointment can help you feel your best. That’s because smoking or using nicotine can raise your heart rate and blood pressure, which may make you lightheaded or dizzy after donating.1

If you do smoke, try to do so at least 30 minutes before or after your donation.

It’s okay to reschedule if you don’t feel well. Our staff will be happy to find another time that works for you.

When Can I Return to Exercising?

Take it easy for at least 24 hours after donating plasma. During that time, you should avoid intense workouts, including heavy weightlifting. After 24 hours, you can jump back into light or moderate exercise.

Day-Before, Day-Of, and Day-After Checklists

Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to prepare for and recover from plasma donation. We’ve put together a few simple checklists to help ensure you’re in great shape for your upcoming donation.2

The day before your donation:

  • Hydrate well with lots of water, sports drinks, and water-dense foods.
