Plasma Donor Compensation: What You Need to Know

Plasma helps create many life-saving medicines people rely on. Unfortunately, it can’t be made in a lab. That’s why patients depend on donors who generously give their time to help others.

People choose to donate plasma for a variety of reasons. Whether for personal motivations, a desire to help those in need, or to receive compensation for volunteering their time, BioLife recognizes and appreciates everyone who graciously donates plasma.

You probably have some questions about how the compensation works. To help you understand what to expect upfront, we’ve put together answers to the most common questions we hear at our donation centers. Let’s dive right in!

Can I Donate Plasma for Money?

BioLife is committed to providing compensation to account for donors’ time when they make a voluntary plasma donation, as is industry standard. Your first donation will typically take at least two hours, while future donations will only require about one hour to complete.

You’ll be paid after each successfully completed donation and may be eligible for bonus offers and first-time donor promotions. It’s a win-win for everyone! That’s why every month hundreds of thousands of donors like you take advantage of our compensation offers by donating their time at one of our more than 230 centers.

How Much Can I Get Paid for My Time Donating Plasma?

The amount of compensation can vary. Donors often use the money they earn from BioLife for immediate expenses, while others save the money for vacation, put it toward debt, or use it to build an emergency fund for unplanned expenses. Plenty of donors also use it to help cover their day-to-day essentials, like groceries, monthly bills, and gas.

Whether you’re a new or returning donor, you’ll want to pay attention to the promotions running at your location. You can do this by checking out your local center’s webpage or clicking the “My Promotions” tab in the BioLife app.

And of course, the more you donate, the more you can make. Keep in mind that you can safely give plasma up to two times within seven days, as long as you wait 48 hours between donations.

How Will I Be Paid for My Time?

At your first donation, you’ll receive a BioLife Debit Card, which enables us to securely and instantly deliver payments to you. There will never be a credit check or payment approval process that prevents you from receiving your compensation. Just complete a donation and your payments will be automatically loaded onto the card! And since the BioLife Debit Card is a Mastercard, it’s easy to spend what you make on pretty much anything. You can even get cash withdrawals from ATMs or securely transfer the funds to a personal bank account.

Are Plasma Donation Payments Taxable?

BioLife complies with all reporting requirements for plasma donation fees under the current U.S. healthcare law. As a donor, you will not receive any tax documents from us. If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to consult your tax specialist since they know your individual tax situation.

What Promotions Does BioLife Offer?

Our centers frequently offer promotions for both new and returning donors, including our Buddy Bonus – a referral program that rewards you for sharing the opportunity to donate plasma with friends, family members, or colleagues. When you refer a buddy to donate and they complete a successful donation, you’ll receive extra money while impacting more lives for the better. Since each center’s offers may vary, we recommend you check with the center nearest you for a list of current promotions and bonuses.

Another great way to boost your compensation is through our My BioLife Rewards loyalty program. It’s free and easy to join, and it allows you to earn loyalty reward points for completing activities like making your first plasma donation, donating seven times in one calendar month, donating in three consecutive months, or having a referral complete a donation. Loyalty points are added to your account automatically and can easily be redeemed for additional funds on your BioLife Debit Card or to make a charitable donation.
